Trade & Industry Database is a composite of several InSite Pro database. It includes the textual Trade & Industry Database, the Company Intelligence Directory Database, and a database of Standard Industrial Classification code descriptions.

Trade & Industry Database offers broad, multi-industry coverage of virtually every major sector of the business world, and is ideal for locating company and industry overviews, management practices, regulatory decisions, and executive changes. It features directory information on more than 100,000 U.S. and international companies, 95% of which are privately held, in addition to the full text and summaries from approximately 1,000 leading trade and industry publications, regional business journals, and business magazines.

Company Profile Records

In addition to articles, Trade & Industry Database provides Company Profiles. To retrieve a Company Profile, conduct a Browse Thesaurus search on the company name and then look for the words "Company Directory Record" following the company name.

SIC Directory Records

In addition to articles and Company Profiles, Trade & Industry Database provides Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Directory Records. To retrieve an SIC Directory Record, conduct a Browse Thesaurus search on a four-digit SIC code -- for example, 7372 to retrieve the record for Prepackaged Software.

If you encounter an SIC code in InSite Pro and would like to know what is included in that SIC, you can review the SIC Directory Record.

Article Type KI Enter one or more article types. For a list of valid article types, see the drop down menu in Fielded Search.
Author AU Enter all or part of an author's name, last name first. Use the truncation character * to ensure maximum retrieval.
Company Name CM Enter all or part of one or more company names. Use the truncation character * to ensure maximum retrieval.
Free Text KT Enter a word or phrase. Note: Free Text searches indexed fields assigned by Gale Group editors, bibliographic information such as the title and author, the abstract, and the full text of the document. Free Text does not search the publication name field.
Industry Category IN Enter one or more industry category names. Use the truncation character * to ensure maximum retrieval or review the list of valid industry categories in Fielded Search. Note: Industry categories are assigned at the publication level rather than the article level. Use this field to insure your results are from the industry you intend. For example, a Free Text search on JAVA and the Industry Category Computers and Office Automation will insure you get articles about the programming language, JAVA, rather Java, America's favorite wake-up beverage.
Keyword KE Enter a word or phrase. Note: Keyword searches indexed fields assigned by Gale Group editors, bibliographic information such as the title and author, and the abstract field.
Named Person NA Enter all or part of a person's name, last name first. Use the truncation character * to ensure maximum retrieval.
Product Code or Name PD Enter one or more product codes or product names. Note: Product Codes do not automatically cascade. Use the truncation character, asterisk (*) to capture all codes within a subject group. For example, to capture all records indexed with product codes at the five, six and seven digit level for the product code starting with 3651, enter 3651*. Product codes can be up to seven digits long. If you only want to retrieve articles at a specific level in the hierarchy, zero fill your entry (e.g. 3651000). Publication Date DA Enter dates in YYYYMMDD format (e.g. 19970301). For additional assistance searching publication dates, see Publication Date Search Guidelines.
Publication Name JN Type the name of one or more publications. See the publication list for a complete list of titles. Note: The publication lists only include titles actively indexed at the Gale Group. Titles no longer being indexed remain in the product, but are not reflected in the publication lists.
Record Number RN Search for a record number. Available in command search only. Please note the alpha character (a) preceding the numbers (e.g. a19071089). Record numbers display at the bottom of every document.
SIC Code SI Enter one, two, three, or four digits from an SIC code. Use the truncation character * if entering less than four digits.
Subject SU Type in a subject term. If you are unfamiliar with InSite Pro's subject terms, you might try a Browse Thesaurus search and browse the list of subject terms related to the topic you're interested in.
Ticker Symbol TS Enter one or more ticker symbols.
Title TI Enter all or part of an article's title.
Trade Name PN Enter one or more trade names. Use the truncation character * to ensure maximum retrieval.

Company Profiles Links in this category take you to directory records for companies discussed in the article.
Subjects Link to more articles indexed with the same subject term. The subject field contains sub-topics (aka sub-divisions). Clicking on a subject term and its accompanying sub-topic will take you to the sub-topic level. You can then view other articles indexed with the same subject term and sub-topic or you can click on the subject term at the top of the list to view other articles indexed with other sub-topics.
Companies Link to more articles indexed with the same company name. The Company Name field contains sub-topics. Clicking on the company name and its accompanying sub-topic will take you to the sub-topic level for that company. For example: Clicking a company name margin link that reads International Business Machines Corp. -- Market Share will take you to more articles about IBM's market share.
Publication Information Link to information about the publication the article is in.

Company Directory Records in Trade & Industry Database can have the following margin links:

Articles about the company Links in this category take you to articles about the company for which you have just viewed a Company Directory Record. If there is a significant number of articles, you will see the articles organized by collective sub-topics (such as earnings, sales and marketing, products & technology, etc.)
Subsidiary Directory Records Links in this category take you to Company Directory Records for subsidiaries of the parent company.
SIC's for the company Links in this category take you to descriptions of the SIC codes assigned to a company.

Summary of Commonly Used Business Sub-topics

Sub-topics are words or phrases that describe the activity taking place in the article. Sub-topics do not stand on their own as a separate field, but rather are assigned as a modifier to another field. The subject, company name, product name, and named person fields all have sub-topics.
