IAC and NAICS

This essay explains IAC's position regarding the new North American Industry Classification System. IAC receives frequent calls asking when, and if, we will be adopting the new coding scheme. If after reading this, you would like to discuss IAC's position further or have any questions, please contact Margot_Diltz@iacnet.com.

Information Access Company has begun to add NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes to its internal files in order to build up a body of information using this coding scheme. At the same time, IAC will continue its use of SIC codes until we have determined that there is no market need for them. It's anticipated that we will retain SIC codes until at least 1998. We have no plans to discontinue using Product Codes. NAICS codes will be added to the company profile records and to the business indexing. Retrospective data will be populated with the NAICS codes based on a map that IAC has developed between product codes and the NAICS codes. NAICS codes will begin to appear in IAC databases once we have a significant amount of data using them.

This essay will be updated with new information as IAC gets closer to including NAICS codes in the databases. For more information about the NAICS codes, see a white paper entitled "NAICS Codes: A New Industry Classification System" in the Industry Insights section of InSite Pro.
